Hatha Yoga, also known as the Yoga of Strength, is a discipline that works on the physical and energetic bodies to restore balance between all parts and lead to the ultimate goal of all yogic approaches: liberation in life. A basic form of yoga, Hatha Yoga features simple poses performed calmly and unhurriedly, combined with notions of breathing (pranayama), relaxation, and meditation. Ideal for beginners, Hatha Yoga is also used as a method for finding greater balance by more experienced practitioners. But what is the meaning of Hatha Yoga? The term Yoga means "union"; the word Hatha, in turn, has a double meaning: the first is "effort"—the mental and physical effort both essential for practicing yoga consistently. The second meaning of Hatha comes from the literal translation of the words that compose the term itself: Ha means "sun" and indicates masculine energy, Tha means "moon," and refers to feminine energy. The word Hatha therefore represents the two polarities, the opposing energies that in practice unite to achieve harmony. For this very reason, the practice of Hatha Yoga teaches that the body, mind, and spirit are an indivisible whole. It views bodily health as a natural state, since a sick or weak body is an obstacle to the path to awareness and calm of mind. Hatha Yoga teaches us to achieve peace and replenish inner strength. It also focuses on regularity and recommends a vegetarian diet, because vegetarian food possesses subtle vibrations and does not interfere with the spiritual development of gross energies but rather helps strengthen them.
